Just the other day, I was in a grocery store and remembered what a freaking joy it was each year to dream up what I wanted on my birthday cake. For me, it was things like the shark from Jaws or, more often than not, anything Star Wars-related. But this kid’s choice, well, takes the … cake?

Music demon
He’s listening to this music, and it’s so loud you don’t need to share his headset — you can hear it at the other end of the carriage. He won’t have any hearing left in 12 months if he keeps up this noise level. Despite the misconception that this is not limited to young people and rap music, this blasting of tunes is also regularly displayed by 30-somethings with country tracks and the familiar middle-aged AC/DC fan in his business suit — easy to spot with the foot beating to Angus Young’s guitar.

Headbanger
Not to be confused with the Music Demon, these are the BART riders who wear their handbags, satchels or computer bags over their shoulders and walk down the center aisle banging heads and shoulders as they go, oblivious to the damage they cause. This species is often experienced in the center aisle on domestic flights as well. Be careful because they are also known to attack your cheek, your ears and the occasional eye. Advice: Put your bag on the floor between your feet. I would like to get off the train in a half-hour without damage to my facial features.

After a rumpus, alcohol soaked night in Oakland, my roommate, Austin, and I headed home to San Francisco. We caught the last train, and as it sat in the station, Austin spontaneously jumped out of his seat and performed yoga, demonstrating a perfect back arch. With encouragement, I joined in. Not a single person was in our car, and for a moment it felt like we owned the train, free to do any and all yoga poses we could muster.

Then I started taking pictures of Austin miraculously maintaining his arch, but i knew the best shot would be from the platform. The doors were still open, so i ran out of the last train to SF and snapped this shot. The doors closed and i rushed forward, “NOO!” I yelled with disbelief as i pounded my fists. Austin collapsed with laughter. I looked at the operator pathetically, who smiled back. Then, the doors opened. It was like a mirage. A beautiful, luscious Bart oasis. The End.

This is the creepiest crazy guy I’ve shared a train with this decade (the teens). I think it was the rasputin hat and cane that made him so spooky. Also notice the vintage jordans.

My partner and I were walking through Civic Center Station Friday night when we heard the most ungodly combination of noises.

On our right was a gentleman attempting to play a soprano saxophone. Actually, he was playing it quite well — especially considering that on the left was some long-haired dude wildly strumming a guitar, whooping and hollering and generally trying to throw the saxophonist off his game.

The saxophonist was playing his song without missing any notes (I think; it was hard to tell in all the cacophony), being generally very Zen about the whole situation. The guitarist, on the other hand, was just playing random combinations of notes on the guitar and screeching as loud as he could, evidently just to make it impossible for anyone to enjoy his fellow musician’s performance.

The oddest part was, the guitarist had several dollars in his open case. I suppose it’s possible he put them there himself, but it seems just as likely that some folks actually gave him money. Why?

My partner said he was tempted to take money from the one and give it to the other. I wish I’d thought of that when we were walking by. I wonder what would have happened if we’d done it.
